Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were on Friday battling a fire outbreak at the Bono Energy Terminal along the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway in the Olodi Apapa area of Lagos, as emergency teams raced to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading to nearby facilities.

The fire broke out at the terminal near Coconut Bus Stop, a busy stretch of road known for heavy industrial and fuel-related activity. Eyewitnesses reported seeing firefighters at the scene making urgent efforts to bring the flames under control as thick smoke and emergency activity drew attention along the corridor.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that its operatives had been deployed to the scene and were actively working on the incident. In a statement shared by its spokesperson, Shakiru Amodu, the agency said:

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently curbing a Fire explosion at Bono Energy Terminal on Apapa-Oworonshoki Expressway, by Coconut, Olodi Apapa, Lagos. Update to follow.”

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had not yet been established. Authorities had also not disclosed whether there were any casualties or the full extent of damage caused by the incident.

The firefighting operation was focused on preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining facilities and infrastructure within the industrial zone, where several petroleum, logistics and commercial operations are located. That concern has heightened the urgency of the response, given the concentration of flammable materials and critical assets in the area.

Motorists and residents around the expressway were urged to exercise caution while emergency responders continued their work at the scene. Traffic disruptions were also expected along parts of the Apapa–Oworonshoki Expressway as firefighters and other emergency personnel maintained their operations.

Friday’s inferno comes just days after another fire outbreak in Lagos stirred public concern over fire safety in the state. Sahara Reporters had recently reported a blaze on Abiola Street in the Alapere area of Ketu on Friday evening, which triggered panic among residents and business owners.

In that earlier incident, firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded quickly and were able to stop the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. Although the cause of that fire was not immediately known, eyewitnesses said the prompt intervention of emergency responders helped reduce the scale of the damage.

The latest incident at the Bono Energy Terminal has again placed Lagos’ fire preparedness and industrial safety under scrutiny, especially in densely populated and economically sensitive corridors where fuel storage, logistics and transport activities intersect.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates once the firefighting operation is concluded, including the cause of the fire, the level of damage sustained, and whether any injuries or fatalities were recorded.
