Journalist Zainab Sadiq, who covers events linked to activist Omoyele Sowore, has regained her freedom following sustained public pressure and intervention by rights advocates, lawyers, journalists and civil society groups.
In a statement announcing her release, supporters said: “WE HAVE GOOD NEWS, AUTHORITARIANISM CAN NEVER WIN!” They added that Sadiq was “finally free from the grip of repression” after what they described as determined pressure from Nigerians at home and abroad.
The statement credited a number of individuals and organisations for helping to secure her release, including human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN; Musikilu Mojeed of the International Press Institute (IPI); Barrister Marshall D. F. Abubakar; activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju; Amnesty International Nigeria; Take It Back Movement activists; journalists; civil society organisations; and “countless conscientious Nigerians who refused to remain silent.”
According to the statement, Sadiq’s freedom followed “the conscientious intervention” of those who demanded justice and rejected what they described as repression.
“To everyone who raised their voice, made calls, demanded justice, and stood firmly against repression: THANK YOU!” the statement said.
It added that the episode showed the power of collective action, declaring: “When people of conscience unite and stand against injustice, repression can be defeated.”
The statement concluded with a message of welcome: “Welcome back, Zainab!”
The development has drawn attention from media freedom and human rights advocates, with supporters framing her release as a victory for press freedom and civic resistance. The hashtags attached to the statement were #TakeItBack and #RevolutionNow.
