IKOYI, Lagos โ€” In the case of suspected naira abuse, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and well-known barman Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, have taken a historic step forward by opting for an out-of-court settlement. This ruling represents a sea change in the well reported judicial drama.

Crackdown on Naira Abuse: EFCC and Cubana Chief Priest Choose Out-of-Court Settlement.

The spectacular case revolves around allegations that Cubana Chief Priest violated the Central Bank Act of 2007 by allegedly spraying and tampering with Nigerian banknotes during a social gathering at the luxury Eko Hotel in Lagos. As the proceedings before Justice Kehinde Ogundare began, the parties involved indicated their intention to resolve the disagreement out of court, signalling a shift in the legal case’s trajectory.

Context of the Case:

Cubana Chief Priest, a well-known figure in Nigerian entertainment, found herself embroiled in a scandal following her accusation of three charges of misusing naira, a serious violation punishable by severe penalties under the Central Bank Act. Despite Cubana Chief Priest’s protestations of innocence, he was granted N10 million bail, and Judge Ogundare set a deadline for fulfilling the bail conditions.

Settlement Outside the Court:

Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), the legal representative for Cubana Chief Priest, notified the court that the parties had decided to look into an out-of-court settlement as a calculated effort to hasten the case’s resolution. This strategy, which is based on EFCC Act Section 14(2), provides a means of reaching a settlement outside of the conventional legal system. The initiative was supported by Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari, the prosecuting attorney for the EFCC, who noted that talks are still in progress to find a compromise.

Charges and Their Legal Consequences:

Cubana Chief Priest is accused of spraying and tampering with N500 notes, which is considered a breach of Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act. This is the main focus of the claims against him. In order to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s financial system, the EFCC claims that Cubana Chief Priest’s actions at the social event amounted to an abuse of the country’s money and called for judicial action.

Set the Stage for Public Response:

The case against Cubana Chief Priest is reminiscent of another event in which Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, also referred to as Bobrisky, was recently found guilty of abusing naira and given a six-month prison sentence. The EFCC’s dedication to protecting the rule of law and preventing financial crimes in Nigeria is demonstrated by the legal measures taken against well-known persons who are alleged to have committed offences involving cash.

Consequences for Naira Integrity

The case against Cubana Chief Priest illuminates issues related to naira integrity and the necessity of strict implementation of anti-abuse procedures, in addition to its legal implications. To preserve public faith and confidence in the financial system, the Nigerian Naira must be protected as a symbol of both national identity and economic stability.

A major shift in Nigeria’s legal system has occurred with the decision to seek an out-of-court settlement in the matter of suspected naira misuse by Cubana Chief Priest. The result of this well-known case will surely have an impact on how people view responsibility, justice, and the rule of law in Nigeria’s socioeconomic structure as the EFCC and the accused party negotiate a resolution to the issue.
