ABUJA, FCT Nigeria — Unexpectedly, governors chosen on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to “throw in the towel” if he is unable to lead Nigeria successfully. The PDP governors’ audacious move has spurred a contentious debate, with detractors contending that they need to give up their seats and follow their own advice.

The PDP governors’ statement has drawn criticism for their deliberate disregard for their constitutional obligations. Opponents contend that the governors are engaging in executive flippancy and discharging their responsibilities to their individual states and constituents by recommending President Tinubu to step down.
While all citizens have the right to free speech, there are concerns regarding the tone and content of the governors’ recent communique. Comparing Nigeria to Venezuela in the midst of economic and security challenges has been deemed unhelpful and potentially incendiary.
Our federal system depends on shared responsibilities among the three tiers of government: federal, state, and local. Effective governance demands collaboration and coordination among these levels. PDP governors, as members of the National Economic Council and National Council of State, are expected to contribute constructively to addressing the nation’s challenges.
Critics argue that PDP governors, instead of fulfilling their roles as chief executive officers of their states, have become doomsday vocalists, distracting from their own states’ issues. The call for President Tinubu to resign is seen by some as a self-indictment, considering the governors’ questionable management of federal allocations to their states.
For instance, the Delta state governor, in the midst of his state’s challenges, participates in discussions about the “buck” stopping at the President’s table. Critics question whether the massive federal allocation to Delta state has been justified and utilized for the benefit of the people.
In response to the PDP governors’ call, Felix Morka, National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), suggested that if the “buck stops” at the governors’ table at the state level, they should practice what they preach by resigning.
Amidst the political back-and-forth, President Tinubu’s administration is praised for taking responsibility and providing leadership during challenging economic times. The administration’s bold reforms are touted as essential for economic recovery and sustainable growth.
As the nation navigates this transformative period, Morka urges patience and emphasizes the commitment to mitigating difficulties for a more prosperous future. The call for resignation adds another layer to the ongoing political discourse, shedding light on the challenges and responsibilities at both federal and state levels.
