ABUJA, Nigeria — In a move that aims to bolster Africa’s most populous country’s counterterrorism efforts, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has appointed Major-General Adamu Garba Laka as the new National Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC). This clear-cut measure suggests the country’s dedication to fighting terrorism and preserving national security in the face of the persistent threats posed by terrorist organisations.
Major-General Laka certainly brings a plethora of experience to his new role based on his many roles he held in the North-East region of Nigeria, where he played a key part in adopting tactical measures to undermine terrorist groups operating there. Apart from his noteworthy military background, he also worked for the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sierra Leone and took part in an exercise run by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Senegal.
With master’s degrees in national security from the National Defence University of Pakistan and international affairs and strategic studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Major-General Laka is well-equipped to tackle the complex issues posed by terrorism both domestically and internationally.
President Tinubu voiced confidence in Major-General Laka’s abilities to successfully command the NCTC and oversee counterterrorism efforts across the country in a press release from the State House announcing the appointment. The President emphasized how important it is to address security threats and maintain the country’s stability by acting proactively, cautiously, and preventively.
The appointment of Major-General Laka comes at a critical time for Nigeria, which is still fighting to counteract the threat of terrorism posed by groups like the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.
