In a dramatic turn of event on Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari abruptly terminated his defense in the petition filed by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and his party seeking to upturn the declaration of Buhari as winner of the February 23 presidential election.
“However, intelligence available to the PDP largely posits that the threats against Atiku Abubakar emanated from certain persons around the Buhari Presidency who are jittery that President Muhammadu Buhari’s defence is collapsing at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, for which they have become desperate to use underhand methods to stop Atiku Abubakar,” the party stated.
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja that the body has no hand in the issuance of results to Muhammadu Buhari by the Cambridge University International Assessment Education.
Buhari had in 2015 claimed that his certificates were with the military board on request. But one of his witnesses, Major General Paul Tafa, (Rtd) who claimed to have been enlisted in the Nigerian Army with Buhari on April 16, 1962, however denied that they were ordered to submit their certificates to the military board.
Mr Peter Obi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Presidential Candidate in the last general elections, has urged Nigerians to keep hope alive as the party will reclaim its mandate through the tribunal.
